LINGUISTICALLY PROFICIENT CHEMIST
Students participate in the language competition called Linguistically Proficient Chemist, where they compete for the best presentation and defense of a technical topic in a foreign language. The competition takes place in two sections: English and Slovak as a foreign language. The Language Department invites representatives and linguistically competent experts from other departments at the Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology (FCHPT) of the Slovak University of Technology (STU) to serve on the jury. The jury usually also includes teaching staff from the language departments of other faculties.
The competition is open to undergraduate students (Bachelor’s level) studying chemistry, food chemistry, and technology.
The best presentations in each language will receive financial rewards as follows:
- 1st place: 150 EUR (+30/35 points for gaining accommodation in the dormitory)
- 2nd place: 100 EUR (+20/25 points for gaining accommodation in the dormitory)
- 3rd place: 50 EUR (+10/15 points for gaining accommodation in the dormitory)
Students who participate but do not place in the top three will receive +5/5 points for gaining accommodation in the dormitory.
Evaluation Criteria: 10 points
- Content – Presentation of the topic in a foreign language (10 minutes), discussion, defense of the work in a technical conversation (5 minutes)
- Pronunciation – Verbal expression focused on correct pronunciation and intonation in the given language
- Grammar – Correct usage of grammatical structures
- Structure – Clear processing of the technical topic
- Oral Expression – Engaging the audience, eye contact, communication with the audience
- Duration – (-1 point for exceeding the 10-minute time limit)
- Cited Sources – To be listed at the end of the presentation
